JCI stands for Junior Chamber International. It is a worldwide non-profit organization of young active citizens aged 18 to 40 who develop their leadership skills by running projects that help their communities. In the Philippines, JCI works through JCI Philippines and its local chapters, called local organizations. Its members are also called "Jaycees," from the letters J.C., short for Junior Chamber.

But "JCI" can mean more than one thing. A hospital in Manila might show a "JCI accredited" seal, and an investor might know JCI as a stock ticker. Here is what each JCI means, and how to tell which one people are talking about.

JCI meaning: Junior Chamber International

In everyday Filipino conversation, especially among young professionals, students and civic groups, JCI almost always means Junior Chamber International. Each word in the name has a story:

  • Junior means the members are young. JCI is for people aged 18 to 40.
  • Chamber comes from the group's early ties to a chamber of commerce in the United States. Today JCI is not a business chamber; it is a leadership development organization.
  • International means it is a global network. JCI has members in more than 100 countries, organized into national organizations like JCI Philippines.

Where the name came from

The movement began in St. Louis, Missouri. On October 13, 1915, Henry Giessenbier and 32 other young men formed the Young Men's Progressive Civic Association. About a year later the group became known as the Junior Citizens, and soon after as the Junior Chamber of Commerce, after it affiliated with the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce.

The idea spread to other cities and countries. On December 11, 1944, representatives from eight countries met in Mexico City and founded Junior Chamber International, the umbrella organization that links them all. You can read the longer story in the Junior Chamber International article on Wikipedia and on JCI's own About page.

What "Jaycees" means

"Jaycee" is simply the letters J.C., for Junior Chamber, spelled out as a word. Local chapters in the United States still go by the name Jaycees, and in the Philippines older members and news reports often call JCI Philippines the "Philippine Jaycees." A JCI member is a Jaycee, and a member honored for outstanding service to JCI may be named a JCI Senator, a lifetime membership that continues after age 40.

What does JCI do?

JCI's mission is "to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change." In practice, that means members learn by doing:

  • They run community projects. Feeding programs, tree planting, school supply drives, health screenings and youth forums, planned and led by the members themselves.
  • They take leadership training. Courses in public speaking, project management and running meetings. See our public speaking tips for first-time leaders and our guide to the qualities of a good leader.
  • They take turns leading. Officer terms usually last one year, so a member can chair a project, sit on the board and run for chapter president within a few years.
  • They connect across borders. Area conferences, national conventions and the yearly JCI World Congress bring members from many chapters and countries together.

Many chapters tie their projects to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Our explainer on the SDGs in the Philippines shows how that works locally.

What JCI means in the Philippines

According to JCI Philippines, the movement in the country began with JCI Manila in 1947. Today JCI Philippines has local organizations in cities and provinces across Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. It is best known for The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) awards, which honor Filipinos aged 18 to 40 for outstanding work in their fields. Other meanings of JCI

If you searched "JCI" and found hospitals or air conditioners, you ran into a different JCI. The two you are most likely to see in the Philippines are:

  • Joint Commission International (JCI). A non-profit based in the United States that accredits hospitals and health care organizations around the world. It is the international arm of The Joint Commission. When a Philippine hospital says it is "JCI accredited," it means it passed this body's patient safety and quality standards. St. Luke's Medical Center, The Medical City and Makati Medical Center are among the Philippine hospitals that announce JCI accreditation.
  • Johnson Controls International. A company that makes building equipment such as air conditioning, fire safety and security systems. "JCI" is its stock ticker on the New York Stock Exchange, and you may see it on equipment labels and websites.

A quick way to tell them apart: if the topic is a hospital, it is Joint Commission International. If it is a building system or a stock, it is Johnson Controls. If it is young people, leadership, community projects or the TOYM awards, it is Junior Chamber International.
